“Evolving Character Development Program”

Offering an educational model for character development, focusing on the

fundamental needs of children and society for today and beyond.

PURPOSE ~ In this busy, challenging and changing world it is becoming increasingly necessary for young children to learn and practice skills that help them meet the needs of an evolving society.  These skills can be referred to as spiritual qualities, or virtues recognized as the fundamental building blocks of character.    When drawn out from children, we witness a profound change in how children relate to each other, their family and those around them.  Professional Development Programs offered by Sharing Circles, known as the “Evolving Character Development Program” offers a renewed focus on character development in education to assist caregivers and teachers in helping children from the youngest of ages meet the challenges of today and beyond.

COURSE OUTLINE ~ The program allows participants to:

·         explore historical perspectives of education in the context of considering priorities of approach needed to assist children to meet challenges of society today,

·         reflect on the origin of education including consideration of theorists including Froebel, Piaget, Bronfenbrenner and Vygotsky just to name a few,

·         consider challenges of society in 2008 and beyond and explore the implications of this on choice of curriculum, stories, songs, environment, resources and the modeling provided by adults, while exploring current models and theories that meet these challenges such as Reggio Emilio, Ryan and Gardner,

·         through participatory activities explore how the building of character can support the development of the individual child and society at large,

·         source available resources, and participate in making some simple and cost effective resources for use in a variety of settings that assist with character development.
